How should we pray?

In this message, John MacArthur tackles one of the most foundational questions of the Christian life: not just why we pray, but how we should pray. When the disciples saw Jesus at prayer, they asked Him, “Lord, teach us to pray” (Luke 11:1–2), and Jesus responded by giving them what we now call the Lord’s Prayer—a pattern that shows us how to align our hearts and minds with God’s will as we commune with our Father in heaven. This sermon unpacks that model from Scripture (Luke 11:1–4; cf. Matthew 6:9–13), drawing us into a deeper understanding of prayer that includes reverence for God’s name, submission to His kingdom and will, dependence on His provision, confession of sin and forgiveness, and reliance on His protection. Through clear, biblical teaching, MacArthur shows that prayer is not a series of religious formulas, but a Christ-taught framework to shape our conversation with God according to His Word.

Many Christians struggle not only with questions regarding the purpose of prayer, but also with questions regarding how they should pray. The disciples themselves asked Jesus to teach them how to pray. In this message, John MacArthur explains how the Lord’s Prayer continues to answer this most basic question.
