Justified and Sanctified in Christ
A saint is someone who has been justified.
Scripture says, “The righteous will live by faith.” This is stated in:
Habakkuk 2:4
“Behold, his soul is puffed up; it is not upright in him; but the righteous will live by his faith.”
Through faith, a wonderful exchange takes place: my sins for His righteousness.
The Universal Guilt of Man—Romans 1-3
In Romans, Paul explains that every person is guilty before God.
Not only Gentiles, but also Jews.
Romans 3:9-11
“What then? Are we any better? Certainly not! For we have just proved that both Jews and Greeks are all under sin, as it is written:
“There is none righteous, no, not one; there is none who understands; there is none who seeks God.”
When the righteous Judge looks upon the earth, does He find a righteous person? No.
But God has solved the problem from above down.
The Revelation of God’s Justification—Romans 3:21–24
Romans 3:21–24
“But now apart from the law, the righteousness of God has been revealed, testified by the Law and the Prophets:
even the righteousness of God through faith in Jesus Christ to all and upon all who believe. For there is no distinction.
For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,
being justified freely by His grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus.”
Justification is an immediate, legal act of God whereby He:
- forgives our sins and credits Christ’s righteousness to us,
- declares us righteous in His sight.
Adoption—Adopted as Children of God
Adoption means that God adopts us into His family.
Ephesians 1:5
“He predestined us to adoption as sons through Jesus Christ to himself, according to the good pleasure of his will.”
Romans 8:12–13, 17
“Therefore, brothers, we are not under obligation to the flesh to live according to the flesh. For if you live according to the flesh, you will die, but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live.”
“And if children, then heirs—heirs of God and joint-heirs with Christ.”
Through adoption, this happens:
- slaves become children,
- offenders become heirs,
- sinners are set free.
United with Christ—a new life
A new creation
2 Corinthians 5:17
“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new.”
A New Heart and a New Spirit
Ezekiel 36:26–27
“I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit within you; I will take away the heart of stone from your flesh and give you a heart of flesh.
I will put my Spirit within you, and I will cause you to walk in my statutes.”
A New Identity
Romans 5:20
“But the law was added so that the transgression might abound; and where sin abounded, grace abounded all the more.”
Romans 6:2
“Certainly not! How shall we, who died to sin, still live in it?”
Colossians 2:6–7
“As you have received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in him, rooted and built up in him and established in the faith.”
A New Relationship
Romans 8:15–16
“For you did not receive the spirit of slavery leading to fear again, but you received the Spirit of adoption, through whom we cry, ‘Abba, Father!’
The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God.”
A New Way of Living
Romans 6:11–12
“So you also must reckon yourselves to be dead to sin, but alive to God in Christ Jesus.
Therefore do not let sin reign in your mortal body.”
Galatians 5:16–17
“Walk by the Spirit, and you will not fulfill the lust of the flesh. For the flesh lusts against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh.”
Sanctification is an ongoing work of both God and humanity: a process by which we are increasingly separated from sin and become more and more like Christ.
Why are we here on earth?
Luke 7:47
“Therefore I tell you, her sins, which are many, are forgiven, for she loved much.”
Colossians 3:23–24
“And whatever you do, do it heartily, as to the Lord and not to men,
knowing that from the Lord you will receive the inheritance as a reward; for you serve Christ the Lord.”
A Righteous Heart
- Doing everything as to the Lord.
- Doing things for God’s glory—even when it is difficult, challenging, or unpleasant.
The Goal of Sanctification
Romans 8:29
“For whom he foreknew, he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son.”
The goal of sanctification is to resemble Christ and do what God requires of us.
Living by grace, not by your own strength
1 Corinthians 15:9–10
“But by the grace of God I am what I am, and his grace toward me was not in vain.”
But I labored more than they all; yet not I, but the grace of God which is with me.”
Sanctification is effort, but always from grace, never from one’s own merit.
Gratitude
We live in deep gratitude for what God’s Son, Jesus Christ, has done:
His forgiveness, His substitutionary sacrifice, His righteousness, His adoption, His Spirit, His sanctification.
